Nehru Planetarium, New Delhi is situated in the green surroundings of the Teen Murti House, earlier the official residence of India's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, and now a museum in his memory. Conscious of the fact that an understanding of the spirit and method of science was crucial for children to become responsible citizens, Nehru liked every opportunity to be provided to them in this endeavor. In 1964, the Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund was set up to promote his ideas, and subsequently, it undertook to build the Nehru Planetarium, with its primary aim being the promotion of astronomy education.

Nehru Planetarium is now a wing of the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library.

The process of upgradation and modernisation of the facilities at the Nehru Planetarium, New Delhi, is ongoing, and the planetarium shows will remain closed for the public from April to the beginning of October 2010.

In recent times, two new planetarium programs were added to our library of shows with the old machine. "Chandrayaan : Destination Moon Again" and "Yeh taara, woh taara : An alert on Light Pollution". These and other library programs will be converted for use with the upgraded technology. The new equipment will be inaugurated with a new show "Chandra : A stellar life" marking the beginning of the centenary celebrations of Nobel laureate Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar.

Press reports of various International Year of Astronomy activities of the Delhi planetarium, are [[http://nehruplanetarium.org/taarewiki/pmwiki.php?n=Site.InThePress | here]]

There have been a number of fun and learning activities for visitors, students and amateur astronomers happening at the planetarium, in the quarter January-March 2010. The International Year of Astronomy, year 2009 ended on an exhilirating note for us with Prof. Taylor (an awe inspiring inspiration, as an Astronomer, and a wonderfully warm and concerned human being) visiting the planetarium and interacting with students and amateur astronomers.
