A summer celebration of AstronomySummer lectures with a difference! Here is an opportunity for young people to participate in a summer celebration of astronomy using their home computers and a broadband internet connection. All through the month of June 2010, almost every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, will be lectures and demonstrations at the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library, organised by the Nehru Planetarium, Nehru Memorial Museum and Library. These lectures can be accessed by anyone through online registration from any location of their choice. The lectures are a precursor to the planned weekend course in Astronomy, by the Nehru Planetarium, Nehru Memorial Museum and Library. The weekend course will be of one year duration to be held every saturday and sunday, and made accessible through online facilitation, for interested participants from anywhere in India and outside. The June online lectures will be a mix of overall perspectives in professional as well as amateur astronomy. Please send an email to nehruplanetarium @ gmail . com with subject heading "Registration for June lectures" to register for these lectures. To all registered participants, copies of the power point presentations of each lecture will be e-mailed before the lecture and the registered participants can interact with the speakers through Ustream chat. The lecture will be webcast at moderate video quality and high quality audio streaming. Participants could opt to access either the videostreaming or audio streaming depending on the bandwidth access that they have. There will also be an uploading to Youtube as a deferred live presentation, with maybe a 10-15 minute lag. In general, the lectures would start at 11:30 AM. The lectures will be uploaded in 10 minute segments to Youtube as also webcast - with small breaks after every 10 minute segment. This sequence will be from 11:30 AM to 1 PM. At 1:30 PM, the speaker maybe available for a 15 minute chat segment for any questions and discussions, that the participants may have, keeping in mind the phase lag due to deferred live uploading of lecture segments. Interested participants could also let us know of topics that they would like to have covered, and we will try and see if they could be arranged in July or at a later time. Well, this is a beginning exploration from our side, of such online possibilities which could help our community of educators, interested students and amateur astronomers interact together online, and celebrate our interest in astronomy. Join the yahoogroup created for co-ordinating these online lectures. Links to the lecture Youtube videos - On this page is also the link for the live Ustreaming of the lectures.
