Children's Fortnight 2014Nehru Planetarium, Nehru Memorial Museum and Library, New Delhi, will be celebrating a Children's Fortnight, from the 15th to the 30th of November 2014. This year, at the Nehru Planetarium, the new program that would be available to all school groups and public visitors will be A retrospective look at the evolution of our understanding of the planet Mars, from earliest times to modern, with discussions of the most recent excitements with Mars in Focus - the Mars Orbiter Mission launched and successfully transferred into a Mars orbit, by ISRO In addition to this new and exciting program at the planetarium, there are additional programs which can be booked by schools, which are -
Schools can avail concessional Full sky theatre booking at 9.30 a.m., 10.30 a.m, and 12.30 p.m. Duration of each show is about 35-40 minutes. During the fortnight, all the school groups viewing the 9:30 AM, 10:30 AM and the 12:30 PM shows, will have the opportunity to participate in the exciting Ask an Astronomer Full Dome initiative at the planetarium. There will also be readings from Jawaharlal Nehru, Mark Twain and William Shakespeare, "Under the Stars" in the Planetarium dome. Booking the Planetarium shows for school groups The tickets for the planetarium shows are usually at Rs. 50/- per head. During the Children's fortnight, full sky theater can be booked at the highly concessional rate of Rs. 5000/- for 250 people from a school. Payment can be made in cash, cheque or demand draft drawn in favour of NMML-Nehru Planetarium. Smaller groups of more than 25 can avail a group concession at Rs. 20/- per head, in the 11:30 AM, 1:30 PM, 3:00 PM and 4:00 PM shows. Book in advance to avoid last minute rush. Entry to the sky theater would begin 15 minutes before each show. There will be no entry/refund in case group is late for the scheduled show. The fortnight will also be filled with activities which will be conducted on several days during this period. The activities will be aimed towards facilitating knowledge about the night sky, conducting simple star count observations with the naked eyes for estimating light pollution levels, learning about meteor showers and observing lunar occultations. There will also be simple fun filled activities involving the Earth and the Sky. Most of these activities require prior registration. For some of these activities the cap on the total number of participants is 25-30. Schools bringing a small group of students to view the 11:30 AM show at the planetarium, can pre register for these activities. The detailed program of the special activities for the Fortnight is as follows: Saturday, 15th of November T-shirt painting : Paint a T-shirt with a constellation of your choice. Will be facilitated for 25-30 registered visitors viewing the 11:30 AM planetarium programs. Timings; 12:30 PM to 1:30 PM Sunday, 16th of November Sundial Walkthrough : 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM open to all visitors at the planetarium Tuesday, 18th of November Patchwork Astronomy - A creative crafts corner to enjoy your interest in Astronomy - will be facilitated for 25-30 registered participants from the visitors viewing the 11:30 AM planetarium program. Wednesday, 19th of November Sunspot Watch : 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM open to all visitors at the planetarium Thursday, 20th of November Matka Planetarium - create a planetarium using a simple matka - will be facilitated for 25-30 registered participants from the visitors viewing the 11:30 AM planetarium program. Friday, 21st of November Constellation Cruise - Befriend the night skies - will be facilitated for a group of 25-30 participants viewing the 11:30 AM planetarium programs. Monday, 24th of November Audio Astronomy for the visually challenged : A special initiative at the Planetarium Tuesday, 25th of November Tactile Astronomy - Create tactile aids for astronomy awareness which can be used by the visually challenged - will be facilitated for a group of 25-30 participants viewing the 11:30 AM planetarium programs. Wednesday, 26th of November Constellation Making - Many fun ways of creatively appreciating the constellations - will be facilitated for a group of 25-30 participants viewing the 11:30 AM planetarium programs. Thursday, 27th of November Matke mein Mangal - Paint Mars features on a terracota pot. Will be facilitated for a group of 25-30 participants viewing the 11:30 AM planetarium programs. Friday, 28th of November Sunspot Watch : 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM open to all visitors at the planetarium Monday, 1st of December Discovery Visualisation Workshop A workshop being conducted in collaboration with Discovery Education, for invited participants from schools A workshop for invited participants from schools |
