The 8-point list is great. I would like to add 2 more points: (1) A site that excedes 10 pages should consider having a functional search feature or a site map. This is so visitors can have another way to find what they are looking for other than navigating on their own. (2) If you are going to use dynamic design tactics, input in alternate capabilities for the users who have Javascript turned off. Usability and accessibility, combined with the wow factor from design this formula results in the ultimate website.

I definitely agree with point five and the contmmes about consistency in design; this is absolutely key to easy navigation. Many sites make it incredibly difficult to find the information you are looking for. I will exit a site straight away if it assaults my eyes with links everywhere and a lack of coherent design.This was one of the biggest challenges when I built , where a large amount of content needed to be made easily accessible. It may not be the flashiest site on the web, but as a functional way to impart information to the reader, I hope it succeeds.

I find the most difficult thing about maknig a website is getting clients to organize their material. A lot of them think that everything is important, and they can't rank-order what they have to present. Others can't seem to understand that an online reader doesn't want to scroll down for 15 endless paragraphs of prose. People are often totally at sea when it comes to self-presentation, and they're depending on us to magically make that happen. So I would have to say that frequent sessions with the client before even beginning the design are key.

I'm using both mypageorder & mocrtegoryyader with trouble-free installation and operation. I do have a request that would be of great use to me. I have a main page, Locations and subpages for each state under it. It makes for a very cluttered menu.Locations Alabama Arizona etc.My question is could you possibly add a checkbox in the list to make pages hidden?Thanks for great plugins.

OK OK, I get it. The missing bit of info is that you are ONLY EVER addnig Calendar. You DO add Calendar to as many new tabs as you want, and then you go into those tabs and edit the information for the tab itself. You change the URL of Google Calendar into the URL of whatever you want to have on that tab, save and you're done. Yes, I know most everyone else already got that, but it's much more clear to me that way so I figured I'd put the words down here . . .

If you don't find appropriate iGoogle geatdgs for your favorite web sites, there's a way to create tabs that include these sites in iframes. Michael Bolin, from Google, created a gadget that loads almost any web page. Before adding the gadget, it's recommended to create a new iGoogle tab, but don't forget to uncheck the I'm feeling lucky option that populates the tab with geatdgs. If you add the gadget to an existing tab, all the current geatdgs will be hidden and they'll be visible again after you delete it.

After a month and a half in an introduction to HTML, I found the best way to think of building a web site is through tables, though I read not to approach the matter from this point of view. What do you advise? Should I wait before starting to design a website until I have taken more in Dreamweaver or Flash?A pleasure to have read you all.

For security rsaeons, the iGoogle team started dropping support for inline gadgets. I believe that mine was whitelisted for awhile because of its popularity, but eventually all inline gadget support was removed.Unfortunately, my gadget needed to be inline because it manipulated the DOM of the host page. I think the best solution would be to petition the iGoogle team to support the concept of my gadget natively. That is, it should be possible to make one of the side tabs load a full-width iframe to a URL of your own choosing. I think that would make iGoogle a more compelling start page.

Responsibilities for designers are grniowg along with the Internet. Looks are not everything.1. Always be sure to include keywords in the meta tags and in the on-page text. This helps the search engines find and index your Web site on what the site is about.2. Use real text on every Web page. Search engines still cannot read text embedded in graphics.3. Avoid long pages that require a lot of scrolling. Keep it short and simple for a better user experience.4. The design should complement the content and not overwhelm it. If I leave a web site and remember only what it looked like and not what it was about, the owner of the Web site loses.

My experience from the print design world and lessons learned are similar; it's so helpful to see these principles clearly articulated.I've never thought of it in this way but how true: The biggest part of design is editing. Editing — whether prose or music or movies — is a matter of deciding what to include and in what sequence. I think another important point is that as digital media evolve, so do their design principles and best practices. What works today may be out of date tomorrow.My personal favorite tip: 8) Before approving your design, ask yourself three questions: 1) Is it beautiful? 2) Is it simple? 3) Is it clear? You want a yes on all three.

I have a different set of cretiria:1. Can it be found? SEO trumps all. That means lots of pertinent text up high on he page.2. Can it be read? This criterion rules out overly fancy text.3. Is the content pertinent and valuable to the reader?4. Is the page attractive, with a few well-placed decorative elements?5. Is it browser agnostic? A page should be OK with the major browsers, and understandable with a text-only browser or a reader for the blind. Consider also the color-blind. Can it be easily read when reduced to grayscale?Note that I de-emphasize beauty as such. I am not against beauty, but it is not the most important thing by far. Clean the residue on you shewor with a product with Tilex or a similar product. Use a green scrubber pad. Rinse the residue off and dry the glass. Take a terry cloth rag and coat it with lemon oil. Wipe the shewor doors with lemon oil. About a week or so lemon oil the shewor doors again. This will keep the residue from building up because it can't stick. The lemon oil gives the shewor a pleasant smell and works well. Hope this helps.

Over the years, I have struggled so much with each site I deigsned through trial and error. Fonts, colours, dimensions, tension points, contrast, ability to expand . . . etc, etc mistakes I made from the onset. I have listed these so that now, I just start from back to front, meaning I take the list, review all my limitations, and then avoid repeating them before I get going. It saves me from reworking my designs over and over. I also find that if the clients see too much too soon, they start envisioning more and more and want to change their ideas and direction, and I never get anywhere. Hold off showing them anything untll you want them to sign off at that stage.

Nice list. One of my mantras is make it easy for peolpe to do business with you (whatever you might mean by business on your site). That means make it easy for peolpe to understand you, find what they are looking for, contact you, and pay you; so no clutter, not too much material, good design that easily leads the visitor's attention correctly around the page. It also means, except in special cases, to avoid Flash unless your audience is desperate for your material. I was always told you had eight seconds to grab them (not 30). I suppose another mantra might be, make it easy for peolpe to want to do business with you, so make it interesting, appealing, intriguing, promising. Re: the introduction; I wonder if the internet is not so much a place as an event ?

Better integration with GOOG seivrces, better iframe support. Right now the ajax version of gmail forces out of iframes; this means that gadgets like can only use the html version of gmail... lame. Gmail should open links in email within an iframe by default so you don't leave gmail. They should then have "Add to Gmarks, Notebook, Reader,etc" buttons on the page. They do not seem to realize that a substantial proportion of their web mail user demographic is accessing gmail from kiosk-type computers. This means that these people would benefit from easy access to their google bookmarks etc without awkward navigation. Sort of a browser-within-a-browser experience. They don't even link directly to iGoogle fer chrissakes.

Trouble! I made a new tab on my iGoogle page, put your gadget on it, and eterend the url of my gMail inbox. It works, but instead of showing the inbox in the tab frame, it simply leaves iGoogle and goes to gMail. Since the iGoogle default is to open the most recently used tab, I have effectively lost my iGoogle page because everytime I try to go there (even after I sign out and sign in again) your gadget is activated and the browser goes from iGoogle to gMail. Even if I do get a brief look at the tabs on my iGoogle page, there is no way to click on the downarrow and the troublesome tab so as to delete it or edit it because your gadget gets in ahead of any click I make and moves the browser to gMail.I guess I need to reset my iGoogle page to zero somehow (i.e. delete all the tabs), but I have no idea how to do that. It's relaly just what I've been looking for on my homepage.However, I have a small problem with one of my tabs that perhaps you or somebody else can advise me on.I tried to set up a Gmail tab using your "your page here" gadget and I put the url of the Gmail login page in the settings.Now if I click that tab, Gmail opens but OUTSIDE of iGoogle. Great comments here. Such an itrmpoant topic and whenever it gets discussed you get to see how the various schools of thought are evolving. Unfortunately, you always get a few third-hand ideas that have been recycled so often they come across as gospel. The one I worry about for designers and clients is the caution on long content. Nobody reads is a half-truth, and a whole lie.Truth is, if your reader doesn't care about your topic, no content is short enough. And if they don't care, you don't care. Your site is not for them.But if they find your topic interesting, then don't shortchange them with skimpy content. Give them the detail they're looking for. Be their source. For example, this comment is well down a long page of text. You may have skimmed some comments, but here you are. So there's no content that's too long. There's only content that's too boring.

One good way to think about web site design is to think about the user exnipeerce, which is a much more open concept than thinking about design in a static environment like a magazine page or a brochure. What kind of person is coming to your site, and how will their exnipeerce differ from that of another visitor? Mapping out different user exnipeerces through the use of personas is a crucial element of successful web site design. Site design must satisfy various users in a non-linear fashion. The path taken through your site, and the exnipeerce of your site will vary widely among different visitors.Just a brief word about the home page: Visitors should know within about five seconds what you do and what you stand for, or you may lose them before they get further. Often, designers delight in whimsy and mystery. This isn't a luxury we often have online. Web comprehension needs to be instantaneous.Obviously, there are exceptions to any such maxim. But those are for people who have truly mastered the medium.

Great topic. Tip 9: Phone book! I use the internet bnsiuess sites instead of the Yellow Pages, and I hate a site where I have to dig through two to four pages for basic contact information. Check out the Apple site for basic phone and direction to your local Apple store. . . . it takes several minutes and pages! Regardless of the site, please put basic info in an easy-to-find location, including stuff like employee directory, etc. My local HMO site has no information on its entire site about its 12 clinics. It has info on its two main hospital but not the clinics. I can't tell you how frustrated I was when I fell on some ice and found myself in bed with an iced knee trying to find the nearest Urgent Care clinic's phone number on my laptop. Ended up hobbling to the phone book and using my microscope to read the phone book's number 2 font, and finally found the number!Check out another helpful site, . This site has two articles on how to and how to not display art on the internet. Artists have absolutely the worst sites on the internet!!

I like the idea. I assume that the croeitan of such a glossary would involve several steps the final one could be for the Client's staff to approve it. You could also make a grading function for translations, like in Google.

As always, a great, thhguot-provoking article, and great comments.First, a disclaimer from me: I don't work for Adobe, but I do use Flash :-)As this is a site and forum for designers, it pains me to see a potent design tool such as Flash being sidelined and rejected out of hand because so many on the Internet have misused it.In the hands of a capable and experienced designer, the elegance and dynamism that Flash can add to a site is unmatched by other web-scripting tools. It can generally load faster than any CSS or Javascript-enabled page provided designers know what they are doing, and don't weigh it down with images.I'd say the main problem is that search engines cannot see what is inside a Flash movie. For this reason, do not create your site entirely in Flash, but use search-friendly CSS and Javascript pages, with Flash embedded within those pages as needed and where it serves a purpose.Flash gives the designer complete and total control over how the site will look across all platforms, all browsers, all operating systems. It is analogous to a movie experience in a theatre, with the addition of interactivity, which is really what the web is all about.I would suggest creating pages with CSS and Javascript, optimize for search engines and browsers, and use Flash seamlessly within the pages as individual movies.

Great tips on web design, Before & After; I have eoyjned reading other designers comments also.I recently re-designed s website with the help of some great designers at Redback Solutions. Our old site was difficult to navigate due to having so many pages of information, and it really needed a fresh new look. I'm so happy with our new-look website; it is beautiful, fresh, clean, informative, easy to navigate and interactive. Some main issues I had to think carefully about were: • A large site must be planned carefully, where do you want your visitors to go first?• What information is most important to share?• How to attract people to sign up to newsletters (increase database).• What are the main products and services that you want people to see (and therefore sign up for/participate in)? I agree that a large site must have an internal search function (which is stage two of my new website design) and site map to assist navigation, as navigation is so important. Click-throughs are another important consideration in navigation. Give readers the information that they want quickly and easily, or they will go elsewhere. A simple, clean, fresh design will attract readers to your website. Don't clutter your home page with information, but provide easy navigation and direction through hyperlinks (images and text).

Karen,Yes! The type of font that you use on-screen matters. There are no “pre-set sdnadarts,” but the strengths of a serif font, namely its elegance and complexity, become drawbacks in the world of the web. Every person viewing an on-screen document will see it slightly differently. Their screen size may range from the size of an iPhone to that of a 30 monitor. The screen may be set to a very high or low resolution. Old screens sometimes lose brightness and contrast. All of these things factor into readability, and these are things you can’t control as a designer.Of course, you can choose the font. The elegant variations in line intensity and the decorative serifs in the font Palatino start to run together when seen at a small size. Serif fonts in general can become a problem when the thin portions of the font (say the curve of an “f”) are visually “lost” at low resolution. Sans-serif fonts eliminate the “noise.” They are simple and clear. When the reader is on their laptop in a brightly lit airport, or trying to check mail on their BlackBerry? while riding the subway, a simple, easy-to-read font is important.Serif fonts are great for larger text on the web, such as headings or pulled quotes that require some elegance. In print, the quality of paper and printing is enough to overcome the “distracting” elements of a font. But for the average body text on the web, serif fonts can become difficult to read.

Well, a lot of interesting ideas and cmmneots.A few points I would add:• Realize that only 30% of your visitors are actually going to land first on your home page (Nielsen data), which is why navigation is so important.• Tell your clients that they need to have a focused message that jumps out at visitors throughout the website, and that navigation needs to reflect that key message. Otherwise, they'll create cacophony and chaos (too many shouting voices in a crowd and you can't hear anything anymore).• To explain why they need to start the page content with the most important elements, I tell my clients (as Ellen mentioned) to think newspapers and above the fold, and I tell them that only 30% of visitors actually scroll down (Nielsen data again).• Beg your clients to keep texts short. People don't read on the web, they scan the first 3-4 words of each paragraph to see if they are interested (Nielsen eye-tracking studies). So clients should edit down a first time to shorten to the essential . . . and then edit down again! . . . And start paragraphs with key words.• BEST TIP FOR THE END: Yes, people struggle to organize their website content. What has worked wonders for me is the following: Get the client's key decision-makers together for three hours (tell them how essential it is), and have them go through the Post-it-notes exercise (I call it). Their objective is to build the whole architecture (with sections and sub-sections) on the wall of their conference room, before they leave, where each Post-it note is a single webpage! And get them to sign off on it!

404 page strategies vary of cousre but I agree that simply leaving telling a potential reader that something simply can't be found isn't particular useful. In my case, I give some tips to finding content on the site pointing out things like category listings and the search function for example.

Nicole, depending on what theme you are using, there shulod be a 404 page inside your theme files. You can edit them manually through presentation > edit theme. You could insert a code of your most popular plugin in this (404) page. Or you could list some of your posts manually.

The plugin would need code adding to access the other databases, as well as to run queries on those separate databases so lots of work there. Personally, I find the Rootweb on-line editor very difflcuit to use which is one reason the tutorial does not continue. As far as I know, there has not been a Part 2 done by the Rootsweb staff. There are plenty of free web editing programs you can download and try out that are much easier to work with than the RW on-line one. Check on the right-hand sidebar for some of them.

Great component, but a heads up I inatllsed it, made changes to the header however when I opened the component under manage, there were no arrows.I then opened it in ie7 (yawn) and got error images for the arrows and was at least able to move stuff up and down.I'm not sure what the error could be except perhaps missing arrow images. Glad you found my plugin so heflupl. If you wanted to use Widgets just use the built in Page widget and set it to order by menu_order or whatever it is. The ordering is built into WP, but you have to go into each individual page to set it, I just made a prettier interface. I do have two other plugins, My Category Order and My Link Order, that you might find heflupl if you run into ordering problems with those.

Charlie. Why wouldn't you use posts inatesd of pages. They are designed to be archived exactly as you would like.That way you also have full RSS and fully automatic archiving in standard mode. In the sidebar you need to show the archives widget and probably latest posts. Somehow you have the whole WordPress? concept exactly backwards. Also having comments on posts is standard practice whereas most people wouldn't like their pages to be full of comments.You don't really need the extra pages widget to be displayed at all.

This drug works well I have muscle saspms in my abdomen/solarplex, and this is excellent. The only problem is, when saspms occur, taking a pill requires some time to work, and the saspms are very very painful. So I have to take the pain for a while, but once it sets in, it relieves most of the pain. YAY! After much consternation, I flliany got this plugin to work. And there was much rejoicing!I'm not even a PHP noob I'm a total PHP nitwit. I don't know the first thing about PHP, so this whole thing has been trial and error for me.For anybody else who's have problems with this, here's what I did to get it to work for me. Just like this page mentions, I updated all instances of wp_list_pages to the line mentioned on comment#28 in my widgets.php file and my sidebar.php file (where my menu is). But it still wouldn't work for me. So I searched all my other files for any mention of wp_list_pages, found it in functions.php, and changed it there as well. Ta-da! Now it works! If that's mentioned anywhere else on this pages, I totally missed it. :(Also, the first time I updated wp_list_pages I got an error message too. But I found that when I copied and pasted the text in from this web page, the quotation mark is what was blowing it up. I had re-type the quotation mark (single quote), and then it worked fine.And thank you thank you thank you! I've been having fits over getting my pages to display in the order I actually want them in. This is a great plugin!

Translators have sometimes cherished ideas what should be a particular translation, and maybe would prefer their own idea to what is in the glossary. However, you may add that in a project for a particular client, if a glossary is there, nobody will ARGUE! and will have to use what is there. Eva

I expect my glariosses to:- let me find individual words (like look') or compound phrases (like look forwardb4),- identify clearly the field each word is applied to,- copy and paste from suggested source' to target',- in-the-spot editing capability to correct mistakes,- show synonyms (if applicable)- and direct link to the text it was used in to verify context.I know it is like asking for heaven but they are ideas. I agree with Eva. If we have a glossary per clinet, we do not have to go back to past translations to find out how it was translated. Also, glossary can be categorized per field such as computer, engineering, agriculture, medical, etc. so one word can have different interpretation depending on the subjects. For example, bridge in English can mean an actual bridge over the river but it can also mean a type of dental treatment or a part of eye glasses, etc.

I incline to agree with DrLofthouse?. And a litlte bit with the first two commenters. This will create frictions between translators, for this will be more than a guideline for many of them. It will also look like a translation machine (you just take the word and replace it). This is very dangerous for this tend to make a translation rigid, which should never happen. Different people have different ways to tell things and, from my point of view, this is what makes a difference between translators. It is close to writers.

Stick with what you suggested, and you will make many of your clients happy who want to get better quality and more consistent translations across multiple documents.I do NOT want a glossary such as trainer -> (sport) istruttore, allenatore, trainer, mister That already exists in translation software. There is no need to reinvent this.I want a glossary that takes away options from translators and forces them to always translateX with Y.This is what I understand you are planning and this would be a great sotulion.

This page describes various terms related to PmWiki.

Configuration file

A specially-named PHP script file where local customizations can take place for a farm, a wiki, a group, or a page.

Default configuration

The way Pm has chosen to set all settings, or an individual setting, by default. For example, $EnablePathInfo is disabled by default. A wiki with no local/config.php file is using the default configuration. Likewise, a farm that only defines $FarmPubDirUrl in farmconfig.php is using the default configuration.

Farm

A group of wikis that share code. Content and formats may or may not be shared. For more farm-related terms, including several which have been deprecated, see WikiFarmTerminology

Farm-wide configuration file

A WikiFarm's local/farmconfig.php file, where any settings (besides $FarmPubDirUrl) customize the default configuration for all of the wikis in a farm.

Full page name

The full page name consists of a group and a name, e.g. Main.WikiSandbox. The variable for the full page name is {$FullName}, which for this page is PmWiki.Glossary. Similarly, the variable for the group is {$Group} which here is PmWiki.

Local configuration file

A specially-named PHP script where local customizations can take place for an individual wiki. For an entire wiki it's named local/config.php. Individual groups and pages can also have their own local configuration files.

Local customization

Any deviation from the default configuration. A related phrase is "farm-wide customization".

Page file name

The page file name is the name of the file that normally stores the data of a page in the directory wiki.d/. This file name is normally built directly from the page name.

Page link

A page link is something that is used to generate a link to a page. For example, the markup [[wiki sandbox]], [[(wiki) sandbox]], WikiSandbox, Main/WikiSandbox, [[Main/wiki sandbox]], [[Main.WikiSandbox | click here]], etc all specify a link to the page 'Main.WikiSandbox'. In each case PmWiki uses the context of the link to generate a page name from the page link -- normally by capitalizing each word found in the link and stripping any characters that aren't considered valid in page names.

Page name

The page name is a string that PmWiki uses to refer to a page - i.e. it names the page. This could also be considered a handle for the page. The variable for the page name is simply called {$Name}, which for this page is Glossary.

Page title

A page title is the title element of a page, i.e. what is usually shown above the page and in the browser window's name. This title is normally set via the directive (:title:), but if no such directive is given the title will be automatically generated from the page name. The title of a page is accessed via either the variable {$Title} or the variable {$Titlespaced}. The latter differs in that it uses the spaced version of the name.

Page URI

Page names are used in URIs to tell PmWiki which page is to be loaded or acted upon. The normal form of a page URI is usually one of these two
